Toukiden Kiwami is everything you need on your PS4, ever heard of “Monster Hunter”? Feeling like you miss out on Monster Hunter because you don’t own a Wii U? Well Toukiden gives you the Monster Hunter experience on the PS4 with its own unique style.

In the world of Toukiden, Demons (Oni) have hidden in the shadows aiming to torment mankind. Throughout history, a secret caste of warriors, the Slayers, have been trained to dispose of the demonic threat before it could consume the world. However, an event called the ‘Awakening’ caused rifts to appear in space and time, causing places that had long disappeared from the world to resurface, unleashing hordes of demons that relentlessly hunted humans.

Toukiden is a Oni(demon/monster) slaying action game in which you the Slayer have to save the world from the Oni attack. You’ll face both small and large Oni’s, after slaying these Oni you’ll get resources which can be used to create and upgrade weapons and armor, sounds great right?

Players who haven’t played the first game “Toukiden: Age of demons” can still experience the story scenarios in this entry. Kiwami’s new scenarios begin in chapter 8, where some new features are added.

The fundamentals of Toukiden are great and amazing, you’ll create your own Slayer and go do your business. You’ll choose a weapon class in which you want to start the game, keep in mind that you can change weapons on the go, you are not bound to a single weapon class. Some of the new weapon classes in Kiwami like the spiked club, naginata, and rifle can be used from the start. You’ll soon want to upgrade and fortify your weapons since there is no player progression system, the damage you’ll deal and damage you can take are based on equipment instead of player stats.

Once you have found the right tool for destruction, in my case the Sword, you can equip it with a Mitama, The souls of more than 300 notable heroes from Japanese history, to give yourself some extra abilities, the equip able Mitama are diverse and each one features an unique background story. When you have upgraded and fortified your weapon to a specific level, you have the option of equipping a second Mitama( and later a third), Mitama can develop after battles or at the Shrine, and rise in level. Each time a Mitama rises a level, it learns a new Boost. The upper limit for Mitama levels has been increased in “Toukiden: Kiwami,” and when a Mitama reaches the maximum level, the final Boost learned will be active at all times, while earlier acquired Boosts can be changed at will. The maximum level for Mitama was 10 in the previous title, but in “Toukiden: Kiwami” it has been increased by two. The highest level is known as the “Ultimate Level,” and allows you to learn a special new Boost.

You set these Mitama free by slaying Oni, the first one I set free was “Minamoto no Yorimitsu” an attack orientated Mitama. This gave me the ability to leach health from Oni, Gain Critical hit chance, and get an extended health bar. I’ve never parted from Minamoto no Yorimitsu and use him all the time, despite unlocking a crazy amount of Mitama.

In chapter 2 you’ll get your very own Tenko, a fox like creature, Which you can dress up and feed, your Tenko can equip a Mitama before leaving base and may randomly use its abilities to assist the player’s team if they are in the same area. The player has to locate and contact it on the map for it to follow the party. If it is knocked out, it will return to base. A new mood parameter affects its likelihood of retrieving rare goods. Players may choose to equip it with decorations to increase its findings or improve their pet’s mood with food. Give it a meal for a high morale boost, dumplings to alter fur color, and candies to change the tone of its voice, all Tenko related goods can be found at the Shop. I found it really satisfying to send my Tenko to the same location as I were going when on a mission, you’ll unlock the “Fancy Seeing You here!” trophy but more importantly your Tenko can revive or heal you in battle.

Speaking of battle, how is battle like in Toukiden? Well slaying your first big Oni (Manhunter) is rewarding, while the smaller Oni(like imps) are just annoying little pests. Battling the bigger Oni is what Toukiden is all about, It’s tough and time consuming, yet utmost rewarding. Once you’ve met your first Larger Oni, at the end of chapter 1, you’ll have to defeat the Oni by separating body parts, let the slaying begin!

Joining you in the battle against the Oni are: óka, Nagi, Fugaku, Hatsuho, Hayatori, and Ibuki, new to Kiwami are Reki, Sóma, and Horó. These are all competent Slayers each with their own unique abilities and weapon style.

Before Going on a mission you can accept Quests, these are small tasks provided by villagers, the can differ from giving a girl some Oni Hair, to giving the blacksmith enough material to upgrade your storage. After you accepted the Quests and selected your mission you could always pray for an extra attack or defense boost, this will cost you 100 or 500 in game currency.
For each mission you will choose your companions, keep in mind that some missions are set to certain companions. What worked for me was teaming up with Nagi as much as possible, she has a bow and can use a healing field, this allowed me to regain health while battling Oni and she could do damage to the harder to reach parts of the Oni.

Possessing a potent life force, the Oni have the remarkable ability to regenerate themselves, No matter how much damage their bodies may take, they will look for an opportunity to recover as long as they have sufficient life force remaining. Work together with the other Slayers to destroy their body parts and then use the Ritual of Purification to prevent the Oni from regenerating. Once you have done this more than once the Oni will go into a Rampage, this means you’re close to victory. After you have defeated the Oni it drops resources and could drop a Mitama. You can use these to upgrade your equipment.

You should use your “Destroyer” attack to Separate limbs from the Oni, this allows you to severe a body part in one hit. Even more powerful is the “United Destroyer” an Oni-killing technique yet devised in the long history of the Slayers. By fighting together with your allies, the power of your souls can be combined to unleash this attack of unparalleled destructive force. Far more powerful than a standard “Destroyer” attack, it is strong enough to sever several body parts of a large Oni in one fell swoop.

Mid chapter 3 we unlocked the ability to send a second unit of slayers on a mission, keep in mind that this unit can only go to missions from previous chapters. You will choose a leader for this second team and they will retrieve materials for you.
