During Gamescom we met with 2K for a fresh look and hands-on time with Battleborn 2K’s new IP coming February 2016. Preparefor Battle and be a ultimate Baddass.

During the presentation given by gearbox’s own randy pitchford we got some more information on the different factions surrounding the last star, Solus, a look at the upgrade system used in Battleborn and there were 4 new characters announced.

The Factions:

THE LAST LIGHT CONSORTIUM
The mostly-cybernetic LLC is the greatest economic power left in the universe, defined by a relentless pursuit of profit, no matter the cost. Once a constituent body of the United Peacekeeping Republics, the LLC abandoned the coalition when it became clear that principles and purpose did little to contribute to the bottom line. Owns and operates Minion Robotics, the largest weapons manufacturer still standing.

THE ELDRID
A naturalistic order of observers and scientists, charged with the stewardship of the natural order of the cosmos. Long ago, the reach of the legendary Eldrid spanned entire galaxies — but as the stars themselves have faded into darkness, so too has the might of this ancient faction. As all eyes turn to Solus, what remains of the Eldrid are grappling with their place in a darkening universe as they rally in defense of the Last Star.

THE ROGUES
The unaffiliated free peoples of Solus, colloquially known as the Rogues: misfits, renegades, and survivalists answering to no one. The Rogues make their home in the Detritus Rings, far from the squabbling of the other factions – but they too will have a part to play in determining the fate of the Last Star.

UNITED PEACEKEEPING REPUBLICS
A collection of civilizations banded together under the banner of mutual protection, freedom, and equality, the nomadic UPR – like the other factions – now find themselves in Solus with no home to call their own. Though recently crippled by the secession of one of their strongest constituents, the Last Light Consortium, the UPR remains nonetheless committed to their idealistic sense of justice.

THE JENNERIT IMPERIUM
The mighty Jennerit Imperium once led the fight against the Varelsi, forging alliances with the other factions to save the stars from the void. But in a desperate turn to spare his people from the darkness, the warlord Lothar Rendain staged a coup to seize control of the Imperium, and aligned its destiny with that of the Varelsi. Though the Jennerit have lost much in their struggle, they remain one of the strongest military forces in Solus.

Set in the distant future, Battleborn is a first-person shooter featuring 25 unique playable heroes who form an unlikely alliance to save the last star in the universe from a mysterious enemy hell-bent on its destruction. Battleborn’s narrative-driven story mode can be played alone or co-operatively by up to five friends splitscreen* and online. The game’s three different competitive multiplayer modes can be played by up to 10 players online in action-packed 5v5 matches. Regardless of the mode being played, players will experience deep and customizable character growth for all 25 playable heroes.
The four new playable heroes revealed during Gamescom include:

Ambra: Born into an ancient order of priestesses responsible for discovering a way to prolong life indefinitely, Ambra was betrayed by her leader and her faction, the Jennerit Empire, and now fights alongside the Battleborn. She is a specialist hero, dealing damage up close through her melee attacks and powerful abilities, while healing her allies in the process.

Mellka: A stealthy assassin, Mellka lost her parents at a young age before eventually earning her place among the Eldrid’s black op’s and intelligence bureau. Her life has been defined by a series of staggering losses, but her response to these losses was never despair – it was fury. She strikes quickly, disorienting foes with her nerve gas machine pistol and bio-glaive melee attacks.

Reyna: Known by her followers as “The Valkyrie,” Reyna was born aboard the Rogue faction’s ailing junk heap of a flagship and is a native to the last star system. Reyna has fought tirelessly for the freedom of her space pirate comrades, finding her calling as their inspirational leader. She dishes damage with her laser pistol and uses her command glove to support her teammates.

Benedict: August Benedict Jr. is one of several surviving races of bird-like “Aviant” refugees. He swore allegiance to the Peacekeepers where he’s gained considerable notoriety for being a self-centered jerk that’s capable of astounding destruction with his rocket launcher. Double jumping, rocket jumping, and flying – Benedict’s good at all of them and he lets his teammates know it.

After this amazing presentation by Randy Pitchford, thanks Randy, we had the chance to get some hands-on time with Battleborn. The mode we played was a 5 player co-op mission in which we had to defend and aqcuire some targets. I had my sights on the character Miko, but unfortunately one of the other people playing already chose him. You can’t have the same character in Battleborn which in my oppinion is not the way I prefer playing, I’m a character loyalist and given the chance I will always play my favorite character. On the other hand this mechanic will let you play with every character so you experience every aspect of Battleborn.

I decided to go with Marquis the cybernetic gentleman, Marquis d’Caliber was once butler to Phoebe before an odd encounter with the LLC’s AI leader, the Magna Carta, altered his personality. Now, this high-society sociopath wreaks havoc on the unwashed masses with his sniper cane Bindlebane and his explosively temperamental mechanical owl, Hoodini.

Marquis has some great abilities like; Temporal Distortion,Alter the flow of time in a targeted area for 6 seconds, slowing all enemies who are inside of the time warp. This area effect makes sure you’re slightly faster then your enemies. One of his other abilities is Predatory Strike, Marquis deploys Hoodini to a target location. Hoodini reveals nearby enemies on the map and collides with them, dealing 208-280 damage. Up to 3 owls can be active at once. Combine these abilities with his Bindlebane, Marquis’ signature collapsible sniper rifle, fit with a custom hilt pistol for close-range engagement. Heavily augmentable, and you have a solid character to start the game with.

The game itself felt quite similar to Gearbox’s mega hit Borderlands, which is a good thing. The graphics are amazing and feature a cartoon like style. The effects used in Battleborn are created by Michel Gagne. Gagne is an accomplished animator who has worked on dozens of feature films, including The Iron Giant, Brave, and the Star Wars: Clone Wars television series. Gagne’s hand-animated art style is unmistakable, and suits Battleborn perfectly. The style of Battleborn is one of its unique features which sets it appart from all the other huge AAA games.

A few minutes into the game we could upgrade our character via the Helix system, the Helix system offers a fast and easy way to upgrade your character during the game. You are offered two choices each stage, For Marquis the first choice is THE GREAT(ER) HOODINI, Increases Predatory Strike damage. +15% Damage or WASTE MAKES HASTE, In addition to slowing enemies, Temporal Distortion now hastens allies. +30% Movement Speed for 4 seconds. These choices are reset every match so every match you can make a different choice and in doing so create the perfect character build.

After we Completed the mission and had a great time with Battleborn the game returned to its title screen and we had to leave the arena, Battleborn is a great new IP coming to this generation of consoles and hopefully Gearbox can make the same impact with Battleborn as they did with Borderlands.

Battleborn will be available worldwide on February 9, 2016 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. An open beta will be held prior to the release of the game and more details about the public test will be shared later this year.
