Capcom was initially coy about when Street Fighter will be released in 2023. However, during the June 2022 State of Play of Sony, Capcom announced that Street Fighter 6 will be released during the summer of 2023! We know that it still covers a number of months, but hey, at least we can now narrow it down. As we go nearer and nearer those months, expect Capcom to drop the bombshell and announce the exact date of release (yes, we can’t wait too!).
The latest in the franchise, Street Fighter 5, has a staggering 46 playable characters in total. Too many, is it not? But get this – the developers announced that we can expect more for Street Fighter 6! So far, we have confirmed that the following fighters will appear in the game:
Newcomers on the list are Kimberly, a ninja wannabe with a penchant for anything ‘80s, and Jamie, a self-styled Chinatown peacemaker who is not only a master martial artist but also an excellent dancer.
We’re keeping our eyes peeled for new additions in the list, so keep them coming, Capcom!
3. Modes
Street Fighter 6 offers new ways of playing the game aside from the traditional one-on-one combat. Here are the modes available for play:
This is the classic one-on-one combat mode in Street Fighter where your character faces off with another character, punching each other up until only one remains standing. They added a feature called Extreme Battles, where you can set up your own ground rules before playing the game.
Street Fighter 6 introduces a new way of enjoying single-player mode by introducing the World Tour mode. Under this mode, you are free to explore Metro City in an open-world setting. You can even interact with non-player characters you see on the street! How the story progresses is limited only by your imagination – how you play the game, which character you choose to use, how you interact in the game. This is an exciting addition to the usual combat style mode that we have become accustomed to in Street Fighter.
This mode brings a new dimension, a social spectrum to the otherwise battle-oriented game. In Battle Hub, you get the chance to interact and schedule matches with others while also opting to participate in some tournaments, play classic Capcom games, and purchase some items.
This is a reintroduction of previous Street Fighter mechanics, but instead of flashy combinations of different buttons and commands, it is now being used in a single gauge. Fighters at the start of the fight will need to fill six Drive Stocks. You can choose from the following Drive Gauges:
To make the gameplay more interesting, Street Fighter 6 introduces the live commentary feature. Capcom enlisted real-life game commentators to become the commentator’s voice in the game (one in English and the other in Japanese). The love commentating happens as the fight actually progresses, giving explanations about the moves and providing analysis about the gameplay. Pretty neat, right?
Luckily, Street Fighter 6 will be compatible on many different platforms such as PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and even on PC. This is welcome news for Xbox players who missed out on Street Fighter 5 due to compatibility restrictions. Cheers to more options!
2023 Can’t Come Sooner
We can’t wait for the summer of 2023 to be here! Though it may seem that we already know a lot about the game, we certainly crave more and nothing’s more satisfying than playing the game once it is out. Keeping our eyes peeled and our noses clean for more tidbits from Capcom!
